The 26-day rule, explained

Per-Day Salary = Monthly Salary ÷ Working Days. The confusion is always about the divisor. Most Indian trades divide by 26 — the month’s days minus four weekly offs — so a ₹13,000/month worker earns ₹500 per working day. Some businesses divide by 30 (calendar days), which gives a lower per-day figure of ₹433 for the same salary.

Which one applies is a matter of agreement, but it must be decided upfront and used consistently — most salary disputes at settlement time trace back to the employer assuming 30 and the worker assuming 26. Whichever you choose, earned salary is then simply Per-Day Rate × Days Worked.

Frequently asked questions

Why divide monthly salary by 26 and not 30?+

The 26-day convention treats the four weekly offs as paid: the monthly salary covers 26 working days. Dividing by 30 treats every calendar day as salary-bearing. The 26-day method is the common practice in most Indian labour markets.

How do I calculate salary if a worker joined mid-month?+

Multiply the per-day rate by the days they actually worked. A ₹500/day worker who joined on the 16th and worked 13 days earns ₹6,500 for that month.

Is there an easier way than calculating this every month?+

Yes — the Laborbook app supports both daily-rate and monthly-salary workers, tracks their attendance, and calculates the earned amount for actual days worked automatically.

Stop converting salaries by hand

Laborbook handles monthly and daily-rate workers side by side, with attendance-based salary calculated for you.
